National Standards for the English Language Arts
Standard 5—Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use various writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
Standard 11—Students participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members of a variety of literacy communities.
Standard 12—Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (i.e., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).

• develop a sense of whole numbers and represent and use them in flexible ways, including relating, composing, and decomposing numbers

Geometry Standard for Grades PreK–2—Students should be able to:
• recognize, name, build, draw, compare, and sort two- and three-dimensional shapes
• recognize geometric shapes and structures in the environment and
specify their location
• investigate and predict the results of putting together and taking apart
two- and three-dimensional shapes

National Science Education Standards
Life Science—Content Standard A, Scientific Inquiry:
• Students should possess the abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry; ask a question about objects, organisms, and events in the environment.
• Students should be able to plan and conduct a simple investigation.
• Students should be able to employ simple equipment and tools to gather data and extend the senses.
Life Science—Content Standard C:
• Students should understand that organisms have basic needs. For example, animals need air, water, and food; plants require air, water, nutrients, and light. Organisms can survive only in environments in which their needs can be met.
• The behavior of individual organisms is influenced by external cues (such as a change in the environment).
• An organism’s patterns of behavior are related to the nature of that organism’s environment.
