National Standards for the English Language Arts 

Standard: Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write, using different elements of the writing process to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
Standard: Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources (e.g., print and non-print texts, artifacts, people) to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their audiences and their own purposes. 
Standard: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information.)


Social Studies
Curriculum Standards for Social Studies 

Standard: Time, Continuity, and Change - Early Grades: (a) demonstrate an understanding that different people may describe the same event or situation in diverse ways, citing reasons for the differences in views.
Standard: Individual Development and Identity - Early Grades: (g) analyze a particular event to identify reasons individuals might respond to it in different ways; (h) work independently and cooperatively to accomplish goals.

Standard: Global Connections - Early Grades: (d) explore causes, consequences, and possible solutions to persistent, contemporary, and emerging global issues, such as pollution and endangered species.
